The following collections bring the Pittsburgh regions history to the forefront by highlighting the industry that brought it to power. The banks of the three rivers are littered with reminders of the steel industry that made the city one of the most populated and wealthiest in the country. While the "smoky city" stigma loomed over the city for decades, these reminders of industrial giants stand tall on lands now blooming with innovation, growth and civic enjoyment. Pittsburgh has always been a resilient city and through its own ingenuity it has taken what originally put it on the map as an industrial juggernaut and has turned it into the progressive methods that will put it back on the map in the future.
Remnants of Steel - Hazelwood
Hazelwood is an often forgotten part of the city of Pittsburgh that once served as part of J&L Steel's operations. The shores along this section of the Monongahela have seen an upsurge of redevelopment since the turn of the millennium and Hazelwood has finally joined the ranks with the ALMONO site being developed downriver of the South Side Works.
Remnants of Steel - Braddock - Rust Colored Ingenuity
Joe Magarac, mythical Slavic steelworker stands as a symbol of Braddock, Pennsylvania. Always a giant of history since the late 1700's, the borough between Turtle Creek and the Monongahela River has seen its ups and downs. Bloody battles led by General Braddock gave it it's name and Andrew Carnegie gave it it's fame before an inevitable collapse. Today a rusty town sits forgotten by all but its outside the box thinking residents. While Braddock is far from its former glory, it is inching its way in the right direction.
Remnants of Steel - Station Square
The starting point of the Pittsburgh steel industry, Station Square was also the starting point for Pittsburgh revival as it was one of the first sites that re-purposed and preserved the city's history while giving it new light. A giant monument of industry sits across from what it once helped create, reminding visitors where the city came from and where it is heading.
Remnants of Steel - South Shore
A former hub of industry, the South Shore sits along the banks of the Monongahela River just south of the Golden Triangle. A key to what made the triangle "golden" the South Shore is littered with reminders of the industry that once made it one of the busiest sections of the city. Bounded by two resilient and progressive neighborhoods, the South Shore is slowly being engulfed by the progressiveness of the region.
Remnants of Steel - Carrie Furnace
The Carrie Furnace stands as a reminder of the former Homestead Works. Famous for its size and mark on the history of the Industrial Revolution, the Homestead Works are memorialized by the original smokestacks in the Waterfront and the Carrie Blast Furnace in Rankin that stands as the perfect example of the regions history.
Remnants of Steel #1 - Braddock, PA
The first set of photographs taken depicting Braddock, PA in its past, present and future. Braddock stood as a beacon of the steel industry and helped launch Andrew Carnegie's empire. Now it stands as a beacon of resilience and ingenuity as its residents work towards recovering its former greatness, filled with philanthropy and aiding in regional growth.
