National Aviary - North Side - Pittsburgh Landmarks

As Penguins season is nearing, it is only appropriate to take a closer look at Pittsburgh's avian attraction, the National Aviary. The largest in the country, it was given national status by congress in 1993 and features over 600 birds while sitting on the site of the former Western Penitentiary that operated throughout the 1800's. The aviary, being steps away from famous Pittsburgh eateries such as Peppi's and Nicky's Thai, up the hill from the North Shore and a quick drive to every downtown adjacent neighborhood means that it is centrally located among the North Side's extensive landmarks and civic centers. Being placed across from the Mexican War Streets, a historic district of stately homes on streets named after generals and battles from the war, allows visitors to embrace Pittsburgh's past while seeing it's future take flight.
