The Schenley Oval with it's roots set in the early 1900's sits along a high point while Panther Hollow, once housing a boathouse and now an example of urban stream revitalization sits close by, lower than the rest of the park. From top to bottom Schenley Park provides some of the most stunning sunset photographs in Pittsburgh.
With a sprawling view of the Western sky and city skyline from the Schenley Oval, the warm sunset colors meld together with a park landscape that sits in the foreground. With a wide view of the sky, plane contrails, clouds, tree limbs and skyscrapers blend together perfectly any time of year for fantastic photographs. While the Schenley Oval is my most frequented spot, it provides a new view each and every time. A massive tree sits at the top of the oval and frames the city perfectly and also serves as what I think is the best tree in the city.
Panther Hollow Lake, the terminus of the watershed that covers the park was once home to a boathouse and ice skating during the winter. As the city grew, the tributaries began to work for the sewage systems of the city and the area around the lake fell into disrepair, Today it is a shining example of best practice solutions for urban watershed revival as the city and other agencies work diligently to restore it to its former glory. A bridge spans over the lake, originally connecting two parts of the city as the grew. The bridge reflects into the lake along with another Oakland icon, the Cathedral of Learning as train tracks sit close by.
The following pictures are sunset photographs taken at the Schenley Oval and Panther hollow throughout the month of March and the first few days of April.
